A lover of fiction, storytelling and imagined realities for as long as memory serves, Rita Bass’s productions layer vocal harmonies and synth-lines atop broken beats and pulsating bass in a bid to evoke the same hyper-emotional sentiments that she resonates with on a daily basis. Defining a new, moody sound in bass music, Rita infuses her vocals into breakbeat, jungle and beyond to create a world of ethereal bass.
Rita released her debut double-single ‘Apophenia/Shaped Curve’ in 2021, followed by a RITA BASS REMIXED which featured versions from Ciel, IN2STELLAR and more. Since then, Rita has brought her live dance set to venues and parties including Lucid at Colour Club, the Toff in Town, Melbourne Music Week, the Gasometer Hotel, Miscellania and Hella Queen Festival at Section 8. In 2023 she was comissioned by the City of Melbourne to create a site-specific sound work for Signal’s 27 speaker arrangement in the Melbourne CBD. The piece, titled ‘Toska’, was fuelled by longing for a home that never had the opportunity to be actualised as one, and the resulting heartache of familial disconnect.
As a DJ, Rita boasts playful and energetic sets that mix deep and dark rhythms with oozy bass music, heaving percussion and tripped-out experimental stompers. She’s supported the likes of Tim Reaper, Mun Sing, Ok Williams, x3butterfly, DJ Dragon, Sicaria, Izco, Mincy and beyond while having played parties including Rinse FM x 188 Naarm, Mutations, The Operatives, Liquid Architecture and Sydney’s Club 77 Friday’s. Overseas Rita has played at Kings of Bass in Singapore, Plumbah and Headstream Radio in Bali, All Club in Shanghai and ByeByeDisco in Beijing.
Rita is also 1/2 of the DJ-duo Strange Interactions, who have played at Sun Cycle Festival, Dekmantel Naarm After Party, Outta Range Festival, Brunswick Music Festival, Steel City Dance Discs as well as supporting countless local and international heavy hitters including Djrum & Yu Su.
In 2025 Rita is releasing her debut EP ‘Reimagining’, on Naarm-based label Night Shop Records.
